Uncapped Shamar Joseph bolts into West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad

Barring that, there are no real changes in the setup, which continues to have the same look about it

Earlier on April 23 (Tuesday), Sunil Narine confirmed that he wasn’t coming out of retirement for the national team. On Friday (May 3), Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States of America (USA).

One of the biggest surprises in the squad is the inclusion of the 24-year-old Guyanese pacer Shamar Joseph. Alazarri Joseph, who has grown in stature over the last two years, has been named the vice-captain of the squad.

Barring that, there aren’t too many surprises in the setup, with the inclusion of two front-line spinners in the form of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hossein, with Roston Chase being the third spin option. Shai Hope, who leads the Windies in the ODIs, has also been named in the setup, following his impressive display over the past year.

Andre Russell, who recently returned last year against England continues to be one of the biggest names in the setup. Apart from that, even Romario Shepherd has impressed one and all over the last year will shoulder a bigger role for the Men in Maroon. West Indies open their T20 World Cup campaign against PNG on June 2 (Sunday), with them being pitted in Group C alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand and Uganda.

Squad: Rovman Powell (c), Alzarri Joseph, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hossain, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd
