5 factors that shaped DC's victory over GT

Did you miss the game? Worry not. This recap has got you covered

Axar and Pant’s innings-defining partnership

The Delhi Capitals (DC) had lost three wickets to Sandeep Warrier within the powerplay with only 44 runs on board. That’s when Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant joined hands, carried their team unscathed through the middle overs, and laid the platform for a big finish by scoring 113 runs in 68 deliveries as a pair.

Mohit Sharma’s last over

DC’s winning percentage increased by 10% in a single over of Mohit Sharma when he conceded 31 runs in the last over and allowed DC to reach 224. His four-over spell of 73/0 was the most expensive in IPL history, as Pant smashed him into smithereens.

GT’s middle over capitulation

Gujarat scored 67/1 in the first six overs and were looking in prime position to execute the chase. However, DC kept chipping in with wickets as Kuldeep Yadav and Axar got two wickets in consecutive overs, and then Rasikh Salam pitched in with two wickets of his own.

Anrich Nortje can’t catch a break

Nortje has bowled nine overs in the 16-20 overs phase of IPL 2024 and conceded 160 runs. He has also conceded the most sixes in death overs (16) this season, and today, he gave 24 runs in a single over to David Miller that allowed GT to come within four runs of DC’s target despite a bad middle overs phase.

Tristan Stubb’s magnificent save

On the second ball of the 19th over, Rashid Khan slammed a slower ball from Rasikh down the ground, which was all but going for a flat six, but Stubbs jumped in from nowhere. He caught the ball cleanly and had the presence of mind to throw it back as his body was near the boundary line. He saved five runs then, and GT lost the game by four runs.
