Gary Kirsten appointed Pakistan’s white-ball coach; Gillespie named Test coach

The announcement comes a day after the conclusion of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand which ended in a 2-2 draw

In what comes as a groundbreaking announcement, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have announced that former World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten and former Australian speedster Jason Gillespie, who is an esteemed coach at the domestic level, will lead the country into a new era.

While Kirsten, who was the head coach of Team India when they won the 50-over World Cup in 2011, has been appointed the white-ball head coach of the side, Gillespie has been appointed the red-ball coach.

Azhar Mahmood, meanwhile, has been appointed the all-format assistant coach of the national side.

The announcement was made by PCB on April 28 (Sunday), a day after the conclusion of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand which ended in a 2-2 draw. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the appointment of both Kirsten and Gillespie in a public press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

While Kirsten is currently with the Gujarat Titans (GT) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as an assistant coach, Gillespie, earlier this year, stepped down as the head coach of both South Australia and Adelaide Strikers. The former Australian pacer had another year left in his South Australia and Strikers contract, but decided to leave his post early.
