The Duleep Trophy reverted to its traditional zonal format after three years which provided opportunities for talented players from all parts of the country to share the field with the big guns. It also offered a chance for potential India A and national team prospects to prove themselves. There was a bit of overlap between the India A series against New Zealand A, but the tournament had the presence of big names throughout the 18 days.Here are some who made the most of the limited time and others who slumped during key moments.Yashasvi Jaiswal<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664205806090-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Jaiswal was fresh off a sensational Ranji Trophy season where he scored 498 runs from three matches in Mumbai&rsquo;s run into the final. His form seemed to have gotten better in the Duleep Trophy with a fluent 228 in the quarterfinal against North-East Zone. But scores of 0, 3 and 1 in the next three innings had mistakes that could&rsquo;ve been avoided. A big contribution from him became necessary after West Zone conceded a 57-run lead to South Zone in the final. He stepped up with a counterattacking double hundred which had some beautiful drives and few reprieves. The southpaw did not retract into his shell despite being dropped four times by South&rsquo;s fielders as he powered to 265 within just two and a half sessions to help West set up a massive target.&nbsp;It has been another tournament for the youngster who had suffered from lapses of concentration but has shown resilience to pile on runs. He was dropped by Rajasthan Royals after three games due to sloppy fielding and scoring just 25 runs at the top. But his 235 runs in the next seven matches were crucial for Royals&#39; run into the final. It might not be too long before he gets his first-class call-up to India A.R. Sai Kishore<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664204994808-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The Tamil Nadu youngster has been touted as the next left-arm spin option for the national team following his consistent performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His IPL debut came late into the 2022 edition for Gujarat Titans and after contributing with 2-7 against Lucknow Super Giants, it was impossible to drop him from the playing XI.&nbsp;His Duleep Trophy debut was a memorable one as he ripped apart North Zone&rsquo;s batting with a 7-70 in the semifinal and followed it by 5-86 in the final against West Zone. However, South Zone&rsquo;s strategy to bring him on late in the second innings blunted his influence. The tall spinner uses his long reach to optimum effect and can fire the ball in dangerous areas, even though it is in short bursts. With India already having two quality left-arm spin options in Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, it might be some time for Sai Kishore to scale up as he will be needed to sharpen his batting skills to compete for that role.Prithvi Shaw<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664204862587-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The Mumbai opener is leaving no stone unturned for a comeback to the Indian team. Since his last international appearance in July 2021, Shaw endured a tough IPL 2022 where ill health had hampered his run-scoring and was also dropped by Delhi Capitals in key matches. His return to domestic cricket has been a fruitful one as he led a young Mumbai side to the 2022 Ranji Trophy final and followed by an excellent hundred in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal against North East Zone.He went from strength to strength in the semifinal against Central Zone with a blistering 60 off 78 in the first innings and then a match-winning 142 off 140 balls in the second innings. He paved his way back to India A set-up for the unofficial one-day series against New Zealand A where he was once again crucial to their series win with a 48-ball 77 in the second match. Since the Ranji final in June, Shaw has only looked fitter and hungrier for runs. His India return though....is an exclusive question for the selectors.Jaydev Unadkat<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664204830746-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">A tidal wave of unwarranted ridicule and apathy of national selectors has never deterred Jaydev Unadkat from giving it his all. Saurashtra&rsquo;s Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup-winning captain boasts of a first-class bowling average of 15.5 across three seasons, which is the best in the country. Playing for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy, Unadkat&rsquo;s 13 wickets and his partnership with fellow pacers Atit Sheth and Chintan Gaja proved to be crucial. When their spinners suffered, it was Unadkat and his fellow fast bowlers who got the breakthroughs.&nbsp;The 30-year-old might be once again judged by his IPL auction numbers, but it will not diminish his value in the domestic circuit.Sarfaraz Khan<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664205768240-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The Mumbaikar&rsquo;s batting numbers in the Ranji Trophy have been nothing but staggering. He has scored 900-plus runs in the last two Ranji seasons, which has surely caught the eye of the national selectors. His inclusion in India A&rsquo;s unofficial Test series against New Zealand A further hinted that he is being considered for the national side in the near future. The 24-year-old uses unorthodox shots like the ramp and reverse sweep quite often in red-ball cricket while possessing the hunger for big scores.&nbsp;His last 20 innings include one triple century, two double hundreds, five hundreds and four fifties. He has now hundreds in Ranji and Duleep Trophy finals which is a fine example of big-match temperament.Mayank and Rahane falter with the bat<img src="https://images-cricketcom.imgix.net/1664204605342-articleimg" style="width: 700px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">While the youngsters have prospects, the senior duo of Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane have lost some more ground for their national team return. After failing with the bat as Punjab Kings&rsquo; captain in IPL 2022 (196 runs from 12 innings), Mayank managed 104 runs from four innings in the Ranji Trophy as Karnataka were knocked out in the quarterfinals. His start to the Duleep Trophy was decent with scores of 49 and 64 in the semifinal against an inexperienced North Zone attack. However, he fared badly in the all-important final as he managed just 23 runs across two innings.Rahane has deservedly received plaudits for schooling Yashasvi Jaiswal for his on-field discipline and captaining West Zone to the title. His individual performances, however, have been unconvincing at best. His national team axing was followed by a terrible run in the IPL 2022 for Kolkata Knight Riders, followed by a hamstring injury that ruled him out of Ranji Trophy knockouts. His return to competitive cricket was against an inexperienced North East bowling attack where he plundered 207 runs in a single innings. Jaiswal, who was fielding close to Ravi Teja, was consistently firing at him and the batter wasn&rsquo;t too pleased with the youngster&rsquo;s behaviour. The South Zone batter finally ran out of patience in the 57th over and that&rsquo;s when Rahane made the tough call.Jaiswal appeared to be animated when Rahane was seen talking to the on-field umpire and Ravi Teja and that&rsquo;s when he was asked to leave the field, leaving West Zone with 10 men on the field. However, he did return after seven overs and saw his side emerge victorious by 294 runs. &ldquo;You have to follow rules and respect the game, your opponents and the umpires. That&rsquo;s the way I have always played my cricket and I will continue to do so. There are certain things you must follow on the field, if you don&rsquo;t, you get off the field. This is my mantra,&rdquo; said Rahane after the match.Stands up for Siraj and Bumrah at SCGDuring the third Test of the 2020-21 tour of Australia, Indian fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were racially abused by some spectators in Sydney and the Indian team management decided to lodge an official complaint with match referee David Boon. The complaint was made after the end of the third day&#39;s play, and when a similar thing happened on day four, Siraj reported the matter to stand-in skipper Rahane who reported it to the on-field umpires.&nbsp;The play was then suspended for 10 minutes and a group of people were evicted from the venue. &quot;When Siraj again came to me, I told the umpires (Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson) that they need to take action and we won&#39;t play till then. The umpires said that you can&#39;t stall the game and can walk out if you want. We said that we are here to play and not sit in the dressing room and insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed his way to a double hundred in just about two-and-half sessions as West Zone took control of proceedings despite South&#39;s 57-run first innings lead on the third day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore.At the end of third day&#39;s play, West Zone were 376 for 3, courtesy Jaiswal&#39;s unbeaten 209 off 244 balls that had 23 boundaries and three sixes. West now have a lead of 319 runs and even if they declare at lunch on Day four, they will have five full sessions to force an outright victory although the track is getting easier for batting with no considerable wear and tear.For South, it will be about batting out in the fourth innings and winning the trophy by virtue of first innings lead. Jaiswal had a 169-run third wicket stand with Shreyas Iyer (71) and another 58 for the unbroken fourth wicket with Sarfaraz Khan (30 batting).It was a day that will be best remembered for the duel between two powerhouse performers in this year&#39;s domestic cricket -- left-handed opener Jaiswal and left-arm spinner Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore.While Jaiswal had failed in the first innings, he came out with a lot more positive intent in the second essay after South were dismissed for 327 with an addition of only nine runs to their overnight score of 318 for 7.Once West came out, Jaiswal was severe on South pacers Basil Thampi (0/67 in 9 overs) and CV Stephen (0/27 in 6 overs) as he and Priyank Panchal (40) added 110 runs at little under five per over for the opening stand.South skipper Hanuma Vihari missed the trick when he introduced Sai Kishore (27-5-100-2) only as second change after the opening stand yielded 80 plus runs. Panchal was caught off Sai Kishore&#39;s bowling and Ajinkya Rahane was then trapped leg before by the off-spinner Gowtham (33-1-139-1).But the joy of two wickets was short-lived once Jaiswal started using his feet to good effect with two spinners in their combined 60 overs went for 239 runs, which was nearly four runs per over.He got good support from Iyer, who did make amends and hit four fours and two sixes before getting dismissed while going for a glory shot off Sai Kishore&#39;s bowling. Iyer, thus missed a half-century in the first innings and didn&#39;t show enough patience to score a hundred in the second.Jaiswal hit off-spinner Gowtham with the turn for a six and didn&#39;t let Sai Kishore settle to one line as he repeatedly came down the track to disturb his line. He also had a six off seamer Stephen&#39;s bowling.There were many boundaries between cover and extra-cover region and one such shot off Gowtham brought up his double hundred. Baba Indrajith&#39;s scintillating hundred and Krishnappa Gowtham&#39;s rearguard 43 took South Zone past West Zone&#39;s first-innings total on an interesting second day of the Duleep Trophy final at the SNR College Ground in Coimbatore.Indrajith&#39;s 118 off 125 balls, along with contributions from Manish Pandey (48) and Gowtham (43 off 55 balls), ensured that South finished the second day on 318/7 -- 48 runs clear of West Zone&#39;s first innings score of 270.The match did turn out to be interesting when South were in a spot at 243/6, but all-rounders Gowtham and T Ravi Teja (26) added 63 for the seventh wicket in just 16.2 overs, and in the process, surpassed West&#39;s total.However, with the final being a five-day affair, South are still some distance away from ensuring a healthy lead, which might not happen with only Teja remaining among the recognised batters. He has R Sai Kishore (6 not out) for company.Earlier in the day, Mayank Agarwal was caught in the slips by Yashasvi Jaiswal off seamer Atit Seth&#39;s delivery. South Zone captain Hanuma Vihari (25), whose Test batting slot is in line, was then caught plumb in-front, but Indrajith was more dominant during their stand of 61.The Tamil Nadu right-hander played some gorgeous drives but was equally adept while working the deliveries pitched on his legs.
