14,000 Runs: Alex Hales Becomes Second-Highest Run-Getter In T20 History

Only the legendary Chris Gayle remains in front of Hales now

Alex Hales today scripted history as he became the third-ever player and the first Englishman to breach the 14,000 run-mark in T20 cricket. In the process, he went past the run tally of West Indies’ Kieron Pollard to become the second-highest run-getter in the format’s history.

Only the legendary Chris Gayle remains in front of Hales now, and the Englishman looks destined to go past that tally, with him only 538 runs shy of the all-time record.

Hales is currently playing for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and he achieved the historic milestone in the clash against Guyana Amazon Warriors in Tarouba. Opening the batting, he posted 74 to help his side to a convincing six-wicket win. With 210 runs to his name, the 36-year-old is the fourth-highest run-getter in the ongoing CPL edition.

Since January 1, 2019, no player in the world has scored more runs than Hales, who during this period has amassed a remarkable 8,850 runs in 315 innings, with 57 fifties and 5 hundreds. He is, however, far from just an accumulator, with his strike rate during this period reading 147.3. In fact, among all batters in T20 history who have scored over 12,000 runs, only Jos Buttler and Kieron Pollard have maintained a higher strike rate than Hales’ 145.44.

The 36-year-old is also a veteran of 75 T20Is, and has a T20 World Cup title to his name. In fact, Hales played a huge part in England winning the 2022 T20 World Cup, with his 86* against India in the semi-final in Adelaide being one of the most devastating knocks played in a knockout game in T20WC history. Hales announced his retirement from T20Is post the final against Pakistan at MCG, which the Three Lions won by 5 wickets to lift the T20WC for the second time in their history.
