The Bihar Cricket Association has named 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the vice-captain of its Ranji Trophy team for the 2025–26 season. He will serve as deputy to Sakibul Gani, with the appointment initially confirmed for the first two matches of the campaign.
While concerns may arise about this appointment since he’s just a teenager, Suryavanshi is already among the most exciting cricketers the state has produced.
Suryavanshi has already made a name for himself at the youth international level. On India Under-19’s tour of Australia, he smashed a 78-ball century and finished as the second-highest run scorer in the multi-day series. Earlier, during the youth ODI series in England, just prior to the Australia tour, he scored a remarkable 143 off 49 balls and finished with 355 runs in five matches.
At the domestic level, his first-class numbers are still modest as he debuted in January 2024 at just 12 years and 284 days old, and has played only five matches for Bihar, scoring 100 runs in 10 innings with a highest score of 41.
Bihar will be competing in the Plate Group after a winless 2024–25 season. Their Ranji campaign begins on October 15 against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna. All eyes will be on Suryavanshi and how he adjusts to this new role; however, it will be hard for the teenager to participate in all games as he has the U19 World Cup coming up in early 2026.
