After six Test losses in a row, all coming this calendar year, it’s finally a ‘W’ for Zimbabwe in Test cricket as the Craig Ervine-led side have emerged victorious in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Harare. However, it’s not just a normal win as the African nation have registered their biggest Test win in 24 years.
Indeed, Zimbabwe have beaten Afghanistan by an innings & 73 runs, making it their third-ever innings win in history, and their first in 24 years, with the last instance coming against Bangladesh in Bulawayo back in 2001.
Innings wins for Zimbabwe in Tests
Innings & 64 runs vs Pakistan in Harare, 1995
Innings & 32 runs vs Bangladesh in Bulawayo, 2001
Innings & 73 runs vs Afghanistan in Harare, 2025
This was a match dominated by the hosts from start to finish. A historic spell from the returning Brad Evans helped Zimbabwe bowl Afghanistan out for 127, and then the hosts scored 359 in response, thanks to a maiden Test ton from Ben Curran. In response, Afghanistan could only manage 159, with Richard Ngarava, this time, picking up a five-wicket haul.
This is just Zimbabwe’s fourth win in Test cricket since 2018, with the previous three coming against Bangladesh in Sylhet this year, Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in 2021 and again Bangladesh in Sylhet in 2018.
The two teams will now face off in a three-match T20I series, starting October 29 (Wednesday).
