29-year-old England Pacer Quits Cricket To Pursue Law
The fast bowler, who debuted in 2019, last played for England in 2023
In a surprising turn of events, England Women fast bowler Freya Davies has bid adieu to her cricketing career to pursue law, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed. The 29-year-old aims to become a solicitor and has therefore decided to solely focus on that, bringing curtains to a 15-year professional career.
“Best of luck to Freya Davies, who made 35 appearances for England, as she retires from Cricket to become a solicitor. All the best for the future, Freya!" the ECB wrote on social media.
Davies has never hidden the fact that she wanted to pursue a career in law, but could not resist the opportunity to play for England.
“You’ve got to put in a lot of hard work. It’s been frustrating at times. There’s always moments when you think about giving up. But also, there’s no time limit on that career, whereas this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ve wanted to do this forever, so it wasn’t something I was going to give up on easily," Davies said in an interview with ESPNCricinfo.
Davies made her England debut six years ago in a T20I against Sri Lanka. Overall, she played 26 matches in the format and took 23 wickets at an economy rate of under seven. However, she played just nine ODIs since debuting in 2019, accounting for 10 scalps.
Davies last played for England in a T20I in 2023. She also played in all seasons of The Hundred, representing London Spirit. She managed to pick up 37 wickets in the tournament at an economy rate of 7.35. Her cricketing career started when she was just 14 in 2010 for Sussex and was part of the squad that won the County Championship three years later in 2013.
“….as she calls time on a wonderful career, we wish Freya all the very best in her future endeavours," Sussex said in a statement on their website.
