Rahul Dravid and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have parted ways, with the former India captain staying on as head coach for just one season. That now opens up an opportunity for a new coach to take over and potentially take RR to their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title since 2008.
We look at a few possible candidates.
Chandrakant Pandit is a serial winner. He led Madhya Pradesh to their maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2022, and then in 2024, he was the brains behind Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) winning their first IPL title in a decade. He could very well be the man to change RR's fortunes as well after the 2008 winners finished a disappointing ninth in Dravid's first season in charge, returning after 10 years, when he was mentor of the team in 2015.
The current director of cricket at RR Kumar Sangakkara could very well be the ideal man to take over as head coach, given that he has been associated with he franchise for four years and understands the expectations. In fact, it was him as head coach when RR reached the IPL final in 2022. A return on the cards for the Sri Lanka legend?
Gary Kirsten's coaching career has never reached the same heights as it did in 2011, when he masterminded India's World Cup triumph. He has previously been the head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for a couple of seasons, and for three seasons between 2022 and 2024, he was also the batting coach of the Gujarat Titans (GT). Taking over as RR head coach could be the former South Africa batter's biggest challenge yet.
