3 Records MS Dhoni Can Break In IPL 2026

We look at three records the CSK legend could break in IPL 2026

There is no official update on whether MS Dhoni will turn up for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, but there’s a strong possibility that the 44-year-old could return for another season. Dhoni played all matches for CSK in IPL 2025.

Last season, the former India captain scored 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17. When Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament after five games, the wicketkeeper-batter even took over CSK’s captaincy for the remaining fixtures.

If he does return, here are three records Dhoni could break in IPL 2026:

Oldest Player To Score An IPL Fifty

At 44 years and 9 days old as of today, Dhoni will be flirting with 45 by the time IPL 2026 arrives. Should he score a fifty in the next season, he will become the oldest player in IPL history to register a 50+ score. The current record is held by Adam Gilchrist, who scored 85* against RCB in 2013 at the age of 41 years and 181 days. Dhoni’s last IPL fifty came in March 2022 against KKR, when he was 40 years and 262 days old.

Third Player To Score 5,000 Runs For A Single Franchise In IPL

Virat Kohli (8,661 runs for RCB) and Rohit Sharma (5,876 runs for MI) are the only two players to have scored over 5,000 runs for a single franchise in the IPL. Dhoni, who has amassed 4,865 runs for CSK in 248 matches at an average of 39.23 and a strike rate of nearly 140, is just 135 runs away from joining that elite list.

First Wicketkeeper To Inflict 50 Stumpings In IPL History

Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and Dhoni executing lightning-fast stumpings. While his batting returns have declined with age, Dhoni remains one of the sharpest wicketkeepers in the IPL. He is the only player with over 200 dismissals (158 catches and 47 stumpings) in the tournament's history. Just three more stumpings will make him the first wicketkeeper to reach the 50-mark. The next active player on the list is Rishabh Pant, with 24 stumpings.
