The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 auction held in Kolkata saw a huge amount of money splashed, as this was the franchise’s final chance to fill their slots in all departments ahead of next season. Pat Cummins became the most expensive overseas purchase when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spent 15.50 crore on him. Glenn Maxwell too went for a hefty sum, with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) shedding 10.75 crore on him. Both the Australian players had a base price of 2 crore.

In the initial set of players to go under the hammer, Chris Morris went to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for 10 crore when his base price was just 1.5 crore. England captain Eoin Morgan and all-rounder Sam Curran were the other two major gainers going for 5.25 crore (KKR) and 5.50 crore (Chennai Super Kings) respectively.

Among the wicketkeepers, Australia's Alex Carey was the biggest gainer as Delhi Capitals (DC) shelled out 2.4 crore, while Sheldon Cottrell (8.50 crore to KKR), Nathan Coulter-Nile (8 crore to MI) and Piyush Chawla (6.75 crore to CSK) were the other major beneficiaries among the bowlers. Another budding star Shimron Hetmyer, who RCB bought for just 4.20 crore in the previous edition, was snapped up by DC for 7.75 crore.

Among the uncapped cricketers, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was taken by KKR for 4 crore from a base price of 30 lakh. In the 2019 auction, he got the entire cricket fraternity talking when KXIP bought him for a whopping 8.40 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped player in IPL.  The youngest player to score a List A double century, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will be part of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in January 2020, too fetched a big sum of 2.4 crore.

Some of the prominent cricketers who went unsold were Evin Lewis, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill and Kesrick Williams.
