Momentum One Day Cup 2020 - Preview

South Africa's domestic 50-over competition will commence from Friday (January 31)

The 2020 Momentum One Day Cup, South Africa's domestic 50-over competition, will commence from Friday (January 31), with defending champions Titans playing Lions in the tournament opener at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Formerly known as the One Day Cup, MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Cup, the tournament has been taking place since 1992-93 and this will be the 39th season of the competition.

Total of six teams - Cape Cobras, Titans, Warriors, Lions, Dolphins and Knights - will feature in the tournament in which total of 33 matches will be playing including the two semi-finals and the final. All teams will play each other twice in the group stage and the final will be played on March 21.

In the previous edition, Dean Elgar-led Titans defeated Dolphins in the final to clinch the trophy. While it was right-arm paceman Junior Dala who starred for Titans in the semi-final by taking six wickets, Aiden Markram scored an 88-ball 127 to help his team win by 135 runs.

In the bowling department, Dala had a terrific season. The right-arm fast bowler took 27 wickets in 11 encounters at an average of 16.59 and a strike rate of 18.8. Kleinveldt and de Lang didn't play as many games but did the job for their respective teams.

Boland Park, City Oval, St Georges Park, Senwes Park and Recreation Ground are venues where you would expect teams to score big. Meanwhile, OUTsurance Oval, Willowmoore Park, Buffalo Park, New Wanderers Stadium and De Beers Diamond Oval were the grounds where bowlers dictated terms.

Depending on the last year's data, it will be a good idea to go with more pacers at venues like Buffalo Park, De Beers Diamond Oval, Willowmoore Park and New Wanderers Stadium, while spinners will find a good amount of assistance at De Beers Diamond Oval, Kingsmead and Recreation Ground.

It's also important to make sure you have the right bowlers depending on the venues. For example, legspinners did well at City Oval and Boland Park while left-arm seamers had good outings at De Beers Diamond Oval and Willowmoore Park.
