Not many players have scored close to 8,000 first-class runs at an average of 48.00 and not gotten a single Test cap, but Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran has had to deal with the constant disappointment of not breaking into the XI despite being a part of the squad.
Easwaran was with the senior team in both Australia and England, but he ended up carrying drinks in all 10 Tests. It’s not just 2025 that’s been painful for him, as since he got his first Test call-up three years ago, over a dozen Indian players have gone on to play Test cricket before the 29-year-old.
With the emergence of Sai Sudharsan, a Test cap looks distant for Easwaran, but former India skipper Sourav Ganguly believes there is still time for the Bengal veteran to break into the Test team.
“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said during a promotional event in Kolkata, reported Times of India.
“I feel batters like Yashasvi (Jaiswal), KL Rahul, (Shubman) Gill, (Rishabh) Pant, (Ravindra) Jadeja have all got runs. It’s only the No. 3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried out there.”
Since the start of 2023, Easwaran has scored 2,095 first-class runs at an average of 56.62, with 8 hundreds. This average jumps close to 60.00 since the start of 2024.
India’s next Test assignment is a two-Test series at home against West Indies, in October.
