Abhishek Sharma smashed his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) century on April 12 (Saturday) against the Punjab Kings and, along the way, broke several records. It was thanks to his maiden ton that SRH chased down 246, the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history.
Playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at his home ground of Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Abhishek pulled out a paper from his pant pockets after completing his century, on which, “This Is For The Orange Army”.
Nothing more would have been apt to celebrate the century as it was a treat for the fans at the stadium, with Abhishek becoming the Indian player with the most runs in an IPL innings.
He reached the milestone after hitting a four off Yash Thakur in the 16th over of the innings. With that four, he went past KL Rahul’s 132, which was the highest score by an Indian batter.
When Abhishek got out on 141, the match was already over, with SRH needing 24 off just 22 balls, chasing 246 to win. On his way to the ton, Abhishek became the second-fastest centurion for the SRH side, smashing his ton in 40 balls, taking one ball more than Travis Head, who hit his ton in 39 balls against RCB in IPL 2024.
Not only that, Abhishek Sharma, with his 14 fours and 10 sixes, also ended up with the second-most boundaries hit by any batter in an innings in IPL history.
