Adam Gilchrist Questions Dhoni’s Captaincy After RCB Loss
Gilchrist wondered if Dhoni’s tactical astuteness is still intact when he is so close to retirement
Former Australian wicketkeeper and Indian Premier League (IPL) winning skipper Adam Gilchrist wasn’t too pleased with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni and his captaincy in the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which CSK lost by two runs.
Gilchrist highlighted the decision to bring back Khaleel Ahmed and make him bowl the 19th over to Romario Shepherd and Tim David. He opined that instead of Khaleel, who had given away a lot of runs in his previous spell, Dhoni could have brought in Anshul Kamboj or Ravindra Jadeja to bowl that over.
“Tactically, I don't know if a huge difference could have been made [by giving the ball to someone other than Khaleel],” Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz Live.
“Given going back to Khaleel was risky at the back end because he had gone for somewhat 32 runs in the first two overs, maybe he could have gone to Kamboj. Given where Noor finished, Jadeja with an extra over of spin is what he could have gone with. It's such a mixed bag. They also bowled 45 dot balls.”
Gilchrist also questioned if Dhoni’s tactical astuteness is still intact when he is so close to retirement
"MS...he is never animated or shows any visible signs that he is upset. I just wonder if the energy is still being generated for him internally,” Glichrist wondered.
“Whether the brain is still ticking for him as astutely as it always has, as he edges closer and closer to the end. Be it this year or next year, whatever it is. I don't want to critique his leadership harshly because I feel he has been let down by some bad bowling,"
After the loss against RCB, CSK now have only two wins out of 11 games and are tottering at the bottom of the points table.
