Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been dealt with a significant blow on the eve of 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) as Adam Zampa has reportedly pulled out of the competition, citing personal reasons. Zampa was retained ahead of the auction in December (2023) and was expected to play a key role in the forthcoming season for the Royals, as an x-factor spin bowler, but the 31-year-old will now take no part in IPL 2024.
There’s been no official word from the franchise, yet, but, according to ESPN Cricinfo, Zampa’s manager has confirmed the aforementioned development.
Zampa is the second notable name RR have lost ahead of the season. Earlier, it was confirmed that Prasidh Krishna would miss the season due to a quadriceps injury he sustained during a Ranji Trophy game in January.
The 31-year-old joins a long list of overseas players who have pulled out of IPL 2024 due to personal reasons. While Harry Brook, Mark Wood, Jason Roy have all withdrawn from the competition completely, David Willey is expected to miss the first few games of the campaign.
Zampa’s Australia teammate Josh Hazlewood, meanwhile, did not enroll his name in the auction in order to spend time with his family post a hectic summer.
Zampa has been playing non-stop cricket from September 2023, starting with the five-match ODI series against South Africa. He’s since featured in a bilateral series against India, played all games in Australia’s successful 50-over World Cup campaign, played in the 2023/24 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Renegades, played both the ODIs and T20Is at home against West Indies and played the three-match T20I series away in New Zealand.
In IPL 2023, the leggie played six games and took eight wickets at an economy of 8.55.
