Eyebrows were raised when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) purchased England’s Jamie Overton for INR 1.5 cr at the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction, but the all-rounder, in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season, has been showing precisely why the five-time champions decided to go after him.
Nine games into BBL 24/25, Overton, representing Adelaide Strikers, has smashed 191 runs at an average of 95.5 and strike rate of 156.6. Batting all his innings either at No.6 or No.7, Overton has been a revelation as a finisher, impacting games down the order through his exceptional ball-striking.
On January 15 (Tuesday) at the Adelaide Oval, the lanky right-hander posted his fifth 25-plus score of the season (in nine hits), blasting 32* off 14 balls to take Strikers to 182/5 in a must-win clash against Sydney Sixers. Overton’s knock featured three fours and a massive six off the bowling of Jack Edwards.
Overton, the twin brother of England fast bowler Craig Overton, initially stole the spotlight thanks to his ability to be rapid with the ball but, of late, has transformed into a batting powerhouse down the order.
Since the start of 2023, the right-hander has scored 996 runs at an average of 26.21 and strike rate of 153 with the bat in hand in T20 cricket. So far in this ongoing BBL season, nobody has scored more runs than him batting at No.6 or lower.
He’s been expensive with the ball this season but has still taken 9 wickets this BBL season at the time of writing this.
The 30-year-old could prove to be a real x-factor for the Super Kings in IPL 2025, particularly on flat batting tracks. He could turn out to be the impact player that makes the difference down the order.
