Afghanistan extend Jonathan Trott's contract for 2024

The former England batter has had a successful 18-month stint with Afghanistan so far, which saw them win four matches at the ODI World Cup recently

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended Jonathan Trott's contract as the head coach of the side for another year. Trott initially took charge of the side in July 2022. His 18-month tenure has seen Afghanistan climb new heights, including securing four wins wins in the ODI World Cup - their best-ever performance in the tournament.

Under Trott, Afghanistan also put on a commendable performance in the Asia Cup 2022, that saw them beating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the first two matches. They also registered their first-ever T20I bilateral series win over Pakistan, and also a maiden ODI series over Bangladesh.

"Mr. Jonathon Trott expressed his pleasure on the extension of his contract and stated that he is looking forward to spending more time with the squad and building on performances of the recently held ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023," the ACB said in a media release.

Afghanistan are currently in the middle of a T20I series against UAE in Sharjah. After that, they will travel to India for a three-match T20I series against the hosts from January 11 to 17, which will be played in Mohali, Gwalior and Bengaluru.

They have many other bilateral series lined up ahead if their participation in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, which will be co-hosted by USA and West Indies. Afghanistan secured an automatic qualification to the mega event, thanks to their superior ICC team ranking.
