Agarkar applies for India Men's national selection committee post: Reports
If selected, the former all-rounder could be the front-runner for the chairman's post
A couple of hours after parting ways with Delhi Capitals on Thursday (June 29), Ajit Agarkar has applied for a position in the Indian Men's national selection committee.
Along with the Indian all-rounder, Shane Watson has also parted ways with the franchise.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, a member of the Mumbai Cricket Association has confirmed this development. The position of the chief selector has been vacant after Chetan Sharma resigned in February after a sting operation.
Shiv Sundar Das from the East, S Sharath from the South, Subroto Banerjee from the Central, and Salil Ankola from the West are the current selectors.
While Sharma was from the North, there is no compulsion in the BCCI constitution to have a selector from each zone. Hence, if selected, Agarkar will be the second member from the West Zone.
The only criteria set by the Board is that the applicant should have played at least seven Tests or 30 First-Class matches or 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class matches. Most importantly, the candidate should have also retired from the game at least five years prior.
The 45-year-old has represented India in 221 games across formats and has been involved in the game in various capacities as a coach or a commentator. With a wealth of experience under his belt, Agarkar would also be the front-runner for the position of chief selector.
The application for the post closes on Friday, June 30, and the new selector, along with the chief selector, should be announced by the end of next week.
