South Africa senior pro Aiden Markram created history on November 26 (Wednesday) after he took the catch of Rishabh Pant to get India five down on Day 5 of the second Test between the two sides in Guwahati.
It was Markram’s seventh catch of the match, which is now the most by a Proteas fielder in the history of the game. The previous best was six catches, which was taken by many South Africans including Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith as prominent names.
Most fielding dismissals for a South Africa fielder in a Test match
7* - Aiden Markram vs IND, Guwahati, 2025
6 - Jacques Kallis vs SL, Cape Town, 2012
6 - Graeme Smith vs AUS, Perth, 2012
6 - David Bedingham vs PAK, Cape Town, 2025
Markram could have been the joint best if he had not dropped a sitter against Kuldeep Yadav as he would have had eight catches to his name with that grab. He nearly held on to another from Sai Sudharsan, but the ball was quite far from him as it went towards the vacant second slip region instead of going to him at first slip.
The 31-year-old still has a chance to join India’s Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the list of most catches in a game by a non-wicketkeeper. With India at 90/5 at the end of the first session when Tea was called on, he still has a chance to grab on to one or even more catches as South Africa would eye nothing less than a win, defending a target of 548.
Markram took five catches in India’s first innings and has already taken two this morning to create a new South African record.
