India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah came under heavy criticism for “picking and choosing” matches during the recently concluded five-Test series in England. Even before the series began, Bumrah had informed the Indian team management that he would be available for only three Tests in order to manage his workload.
As a result, Bumrah played just the first, third, and fourth Tests of the series, sitting out the second and fifth. Ironically, India ended up losing two of the three matches in which he featured, while the only other game was drawn. In contrast, the team won both Tests that Bumrah missed.
Although the outcomes were purely coincidental, the 31-year-old paceman faced significant trolling and criticism from fans and even a few former cricketers, who questioned his approach to workload management.
Speculation grew that Bumrah might also be rested for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, but the bowler himself confirmed his availability for the tournament. With the T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Bumrah’s availability will serve as a massive boost for India.
On August 19 (Tuesday), India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s 15-man squad for the Asia Cup, beginning September 9 in the UAE, and Bumrah’s name was very much included. Notably, this will be his first T20I appearance for India since the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
However, the big question remains - will Bumrah feature in India's every match of the Asia Cup 2025?
India could potentially play as many as seven games if they make it to the final on September 28. Adding to the dilemma is the scheduling - just three days later, India will host West Indies in a two-match Test series, starting October 2.
Addressing the situation, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar gave clarity on how the team intends to use Bumrah moving forward. “I don't think there's any written plan. Been a nice break after the England series. Physios, team management been in touch. Clearly we want him available for all the big games.
“There are WCs, CT, big series like England, Australia - you want him available. Because he's picked up injuries over the last 2-3 years, because of how special and unique it is - it won't change. Based on how he's feeling and how we require him, we hope he's available more often than not.”
So far in his T20I career, Bumrah has played 70 matches for India, taking 89 wickets at a staggering average of 17.74 and an economy rate of just 6.28.
India have been drawn into Group A for the Asia Cup alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, hosts UAE, and Oman. Their campaign will begin against the UAE on September 10. Group B, meanwhile, consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.
