Cricket South Africa (CSA) have confirmed that all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, who suffered a nasty collision in the first ODI in Chester-le-Street and had to be subbed off, will miss the remainder of the one-day series against England as precaution, following sustaining a concussion. Phehulkwayo bowled three wicketless overs in the contest but then had to leave the field after colliding with stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj.
The all-rounder did not return to the field post the concussion and was replaced by Dwaine Pretorius, who bowled three overs in the contest after entering the game as Phehlukwayo’s concussion substitute.
“Following his concussion, Andile has been monitored closely and has shown signs of improvement. He will now commence his concussion return to play rehabilitation program,” a CSA release quoted Proteas team doctor Dr Hashendra Ramjee as saying.
South Africa, though, have not named a replacement for Phehlukwayo, who now faces a race against time in order to be fit for the three-match T20I series starting Wednesday, July 27.
The second ODI of the ongoing series will be played at Old Trafford on July 22nd. South Africa registered a comprehensive 62-run win in the first game thanks to a fine ton from Rassie van der Dussen.
