Andre Russell returns to West Indies squad for England T20Is

The West Indies all-rounder last featured for his national side at the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has been recalled to the West Indies T20 International (T20I) squad after a gap of two years for the series agianst England, starting Tuesday (December 12) in Barbados.

Russell most recently participated in the Abu Dhabi T10, where he turned up for Deccan Gladiators, finishing the tournament as runners-up as New York Strikers won the title on Saturday (December 9). He is expected to link up with the West Indies squad in Barbados later this week.

Fast bowler Matthew Forde, who impressed with a player of the match performance in the third One-Day International (ODI) agianst England, has been named, as has Sherfane Rutherford, who gets his first call-up in the format since 2020. 

The squad also sees the return of Jason Holder and Nicholas Pooran, who were available for the ODIs.Gudakesh Motie is also back after missing the recent India series due to an injury. 

Shai Hope, who had an excellent ODI series against England, has been named Rovman Powell's deputy. Johnson Charles, Obed McCoy, Odean Smith and Oshane Thomas have been excluded from the squad after featuring in the T20Is against India in August.

"This will be the final home T20I series for the West Indies in 2023, as they prepare to be one of the two host teams for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June 2024," West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes, said.

"We have selected a squad that we think gives us the best chance of success in that tournament. We will continue to assess in the lead-up to the competition."

West Indies will co-host the upcoming T20 World Cup along with USA in June 2024. Most recently, the West Indies failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup, after losing to Scotland and the Netherlands in the Qualifiers.
