Andrew McDonald takes over as Australia's full-time head coach

The former Australia all-rounder takes over from Justin Langer, who stepped down under controversial circumstances in February

Andrew McDonald takes over as Australia's full-time head coach. He has signed a four-year deal.

McDonald takes over from Justin Langer, who stepped down under controversial circumstances in February. McDonald, who was Langer's assistant for years, took charge of the team on an interim basis for the historic tour of Pakistan.

Australia won the Test series 1-0 and also won the one-off T20I, but lost the ODI series 1-2.

McDonald has on a few occasions filled in for Lander when the latter needed a break. Most recently it was during the home T20I series against Sri Lanka. Prior to that, McDonald stepped in for an ODI series in India in 2020 and a five-match T20I series against New Zealand in 2021.

"The journey so far has been particularly pleasing, and I am honoured to be given this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead," McDonald said.

"The success of the World Cup, the Ashes Series and now Pakistan has been testament to the hard work and leadership of Justin, Pat and Aaron [Finch] along with the players and the support staff.

"My plan is to build on the growth, depth and experience of the squad while working collectively with the group and across the game. There are many challenges in the short-term which I know excites the leadership group, the players and the staff. I'd also like to thank my family for their support."

McDonald has a vast pedigree as coach havibg lead Victoria and Melbourne Renegades to success, which included winning the Sheffield Shield, Marsh Cup and the BBL in 2018-19.

Australia have a busy 18 months ahead of them, including tour of Sri Lanka, T20 World Cup at home, hosting West Indies and South Africa for a Test series an away Test series against India, an away Ashes, 50-over World Cup in India and potentially the WTC final as well.

McDonald's assistant could take charge of series which are considered low priority, allowing the new head coach a bit of breather.

"Andrew has been appointed as Head Coach in all formats, although some white-ball series may be led by an assistant given the significant workload ahead and the opportunity to continue to develop our coaches and players," CA's General Manager of High Performance and National Teams Ben Oliver said.
