Archer to undergo elbow surgery; could miss few Tests vs India

The England fast bowler recently returned to action after an injury layoff in the County Championship game against Kent

England fast bowler Jofra Archer is all set to undergo surgery on his troublesome right elbow on Friday (May 21) and as a result, he will miss a huge chunk of the English season. The England fast bowler underwent a scan on Wednesday (May 20) and decided to go ahead with the operation post that.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are still hopeful that Archer will play some part in the Test series against India, which is scheduled to begin from August 4, but have not given any timeframe on his return. It is highly likely that he misses the initial stages of the much-anticipated Test series. With the T20 World Cup and The Ashes coming up later this year, England are hopeful of having their fast bowler fully fit by then.

"At the moment, he has a bit of an impingement in his elbow," England's bowling coach, Jon Lewis, told The Guardian

"A lot of fast bowlers get it in their ankle, so it's comparable but a different part of the body. Put a lot of pressure and flexion through any joint, it will take a bashing. But bowlers come through ankle impingements. I don't foresee it being a long-term major issue."

"From what I understand, either short-term or long-term, his elbow will recover. I would expect him to play a lot more international cricket for England. This is just a small blip on his journey," Lewis added.

Archer recently underwent surgery on his right arm, from which fragments of glass particles were removed after a fish tank accident fell on his hand while cleaning at home. His elbow injury first came to light when he pulled out of the Cape Town Test at the start of 2020. Since then he has played just six Tests and managed 12 scalps.

His injury also forced him to pull out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Archer had returned to action in the County Championship for Sussex in the game against Kent. He picked up a couple of wickets in the first innings but did not bowl more than five overs in the second innings. After experiencing some discomfort, he was ruled out of the two-Test series against New Zealand, beginning from June 2.
