There are only a few players in world cricket who are as self-aware and self-confident as Ravichandran Ashwin. Arguably the greatest match-winner India has ever produced in Test cricket, Ashwin, who already has 516 Test wickets, is on his way to becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in the format if he continues for another three to four years.
However, Ashwin doesn’t want to savour all the glory by himself and stated that he was lucky to inherit the legacy of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
"Mai lucky hu [I am lucky]. What [legacy] Anil bhai and Harbhajan left, I have learnt from that. Whatever I am doing today is because of them, and what I am doing is part of the journey," Ashwin told journalist Vimal Kumar in an online conversation.
"When people say they [cricketers] are making so much in the IPL, this and that, mai soch kar hasta hu [I laugh thinking about it]. If the IPL happens in 2040, will the salary be the same as it is today?" he asked.
"The world will stride forward. I will leave somewhere, and someone else will move forward. It's like a 400m relay race....someone will run 100m and someone else another 100m. So it is an evolution, and people will be better. And I am 100 percent sure that someone better or even amazing than me will come."
Ashwin will next play in the World Test Championship Series against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai. With India slated to play 16 Tests in the next 12 months, Ashwin will have a huge role to play in that period.
