Ashwin says he'll be ready for the next game, reveals Iyer

The off-spinner injured his shoulder in DC's win over KXIP

Delhi Capitals (DC) won a thrilling game against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in match two of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 on Sunday in the Super Over. Kagiso Rabada bowled a successful Super Over for the second time in his career, leaving his side just three to win in the end. DC looked down and out during their batting powerplay when they were reduced to 23 for 3, but fought back well to post 157, thanks to a 21-ball 53 from Marcus Stoinis. However, in what was a huge blow for DC, Ravichandran Ashwin injured his shoulder after his first over, trying to stop the ball off his own bowling. Ashwin donned a sling when he came on to the field after the match but he remains confident that he will be available for the next match.

“Ashwin's over was a key one, and it changed the game in our favour, but that's what T20 cricket is. Ashwin says he'll be ready for the next game, but in the end, the physio is going to decide,” DC skipper Shreyas Iyer said in the post-match interview. In his only over of the match, Ashwin got rid of Karun Nair and Nicholas Pooran to tilt the game in DC’s favour.

From Rishabh Pant to Axar Patel, the Shreyas was appreciative of everyone’s effort to help DC get off the mark. “KG (Rabada) is the winning performer, and the way Stoinis batted was game-changing. Our top-order batsmen are difficult to stop like Prithvi. It wasn't easy from the outset to start hitting immediately, and Rishabh and I batted well in the middle to anchor the innings,” the young captain said.

“Axar was fantastic with those middle overs too, stifling the runs in the middle after Ashwin was injured. The way Stoinis assessed the wicket and played that innings was commendable,” he added.

KXIP will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their next match on Thursday, while DC take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday.

It was bittersweet

"It is bittersweet. If at the end of 10 overs, if you had said this match is going to a Super Over, I would have taken it. It's still our first game, so lots of learning. He (Mayank) was unbelievable and to get a game that close was magical. He's been doing well in Tests and to get the game that close again brings a lot of confidence in the group," KL Rahul said.
