Ashwin To Coach RR? His Former CSK Teammate Thinks That’s A Possibility
Ashwin played for RR for three seasons, during which the franchise made the final once
One of the most decorated careers in Indian Premier League (IPL) history came to an end yesterday as Ravichandran Ashwin called it quits from the competition. The fifth-highest wicket-taker in the competition’s history, Ashwin announced his retirement on social media and indicated that he will now aim to play franchise leagues around the world, keen on exploring opportunities abroad.
It remains to be seen how long Ashwin, 38, will play professional cricket, but his former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) teammate Anirudha Srikkanth feels it’s almost a given that the veteran will return to the IPL as a coach, possibly for Rajasthan Royals (RR).
“I feel he'll find a coaching role in one of the IPL teams, most probably the Rajasthan Royals, for all you know. They might look at him in the coaching role,” Srikkanth said on the ‘Cheeky Cheeka’ YouTube channel.
Srikkanth, who has made 20 IPL appearances and played over 100 matches for Tamil Nadu, believes Ashwin will be a highly sought-after commodity in franchise leagues across the world.
“I think Ashwin will be a sought-after commodity in leagues. You have the BBL coming up, SA20 as well, The Hundred is there next year as well. If he can keep fit, I think he can do well in the other leagues for 2-3 years,” the former CSK man said.
Srikkanth further insisted that Ashwin’s bold move could, in the future, inspire several other players to retire from the IPL and explore franchise opportunities across the globe.
“But one thing's for sure, Ashwin could be an example for other players. If someone feels they don't have a future in the IPL but are still capable of playing other leagues, they might go do it,” he said.
