To bolster their preparation for the Asia Cup 2025, which is going to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 onwards, Afghanistan will not only be playing a tri-series involving UAE and Pakistan in Sharjah, but have also roped in a specialist.
Former Ireland allrounder John Mooney, who is famous for hitting the winning runs in Ireland’s best-ever game, a 2011 World Cup win against Ireland in Bengaluru, joined the Afghanistan training camp in Abu Dhabi on August 27 (Wednesday).
The T20I tri-series in the UAE will start in two days' time on August 29 (Friday).
Mooney, 43, has prior experience of working with the Afghanistan team, having been their fielding coach from 2018 to 2019. His tenure had also marked Afghanistan’s debut in Tests with a match against India in Bengaluru.
In his playing days, Mooney featured in 64 ODIs and 27 T20Is for Ireland and was part of five World Cups - three in ODIs (2007, 2011 and 2015) and two in T20s (2009 and 2010).
