Asia Cup 2025: Jasprit Bumrah On Verge Of Becoming First Pacer To Do This In T20Is
Here are three major records Bumrah could break during Asia Cup 2025
It’s been over 14 months since Jasprit Bumrah last played a T20I for India. His most recent appearance came in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa at Bridgetown, where he played a pivotal role in helping India lift the trophy.
Since then, India have played 20 T20Is, but Bumrah has missed all of them - primarily to focus on Test cricket, manage his workload, and recover from an injury during this period. Understandably, the 20-over format took a backseat for him after the last World Cup.
Now, with the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, Bumrah is back in India’s T20I plans. The 31-year-old pacer has been named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, starting September 9 in the UAE, and will once again spearhead the attack.
Here are three major records Bumrah could break during the tournament:
Second Indian to 100 T20I wickets
Bumrah has 89 wickets in 70 T20Is at a phenomenal average of 17.7 and an economy rate of 6.3. No Indian has yet reached the 100-wicket milestone in T20Is. Arshdeep Singh, just one wicket away, is set to be the first, but Bumrah has the chance to follow quickly as the second Indian to achieve the feat.
Hardik Pandya (94 wickets in 114 T20Is) is also in the race, but Bumrah’s superior strike rate and his role as a death-overs specialist give him an edge. If India go all the way to the final, he could play up to seven matches in the Asia Cup.
Third-most wickets in T20s by an Indian
Across all T20 cricket, Bumrah has already claimed 313 wickets. Only Yuzvendra Chahal (380), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (327), Piyush Chawla (319), and Ravichandran Ashwin (317) are ahead of him among Indians.
Bumrah could easily surpass Ashwin and Chawla during the Asia Cup and rise to third place on India’s all-time T20 wicket-takers list.
First pacer with 100 T20I wickets at an economy under 7
Among teams that play Test cricket, seven pacers have taken 100 or more wickets, but none have managed to do so with an economy under 7.
Even though Bumrah bowls nearly 40% of his overs at the death, his economy rate stands at a remarkable 6.3. If he gets to 100 wickets during the Asia Cup, he will become the first pacer in history to reach the landmark with such an economy rate, underlining his unmatched control and consistency.
