It might be good news for the Indian batters, but not so for genuine cricket fans as they might miss the gruelling duel between Australian captain Pat Cummins and Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the upcoming India’s tour of Australia for three ODIs and five T20Is.
Cummins, who had complained of back pain during the last Test of Australia on their West Indies tour in July 2025, also did not bowl in the second innings of the hosts as they were bundled out for 27.
In the latest report in The Sydney Morning Herald, an Australian newspaper, it was said that Cummins attended an audience with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese along with his Australian Test partner Usman Khawaja.
It was after his return from Canberra that he underwent scans on September 1 (Monday), and the images of those scans are to be sent to Cricket Australia medical staff.
“Consultation around the results of the scans, featuring the likes of CA’s chief medical officer Dr John Orchard, team doctor Leigh Golding and physio Nick Jones, is expected to take some time,” reported the paper.
“Depending on the seriousness of Cummins’ back trouble, he may miss all the white ball games that precede the first Ashes Test in Perth in late November, and could also need to avoid playing a Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales.”
“As it is, he will be missing from the Twenty20 squad that will on Tuesday be named to tour New Zealand,” the report added, listing out the matches that Cummins may have to miss.
This is a worrying sign for the Australian cricket team as Cummins, who sent down only 85.1 overs in the four Tests that included three in Australia and one in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, has back issues.
This was not the case after he had sent down 167 overs during India’s visit to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.
India’s tour of Australia 2025 starts on October 19 with the first ODI at Perth.
