Australia have all their bases covered going into Test series vs Pakistan: Nathan Lyon

The first of three Tests is set to begin on Friday (March 4) in Rawalpindi

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon feels his side have all their bases covered and are going into the historic Test series against Pakistan with an aim to complete a 3-0 whitewash

This is Australia's first series in Pakistan in 24 years. The two teams will play for the Benaud-Qadir Trophy, which has been named after the respective team's legendary leg-spinners.

"It's going to be a big challenge, but I'm going into this Test series thinking we're going to be performing and playing our best cricket to win 3-0," Lyon said in a virtual press conference ahead of the first Test.

"We haven't played an away test since 2019 it's a very young, exciting Australian test squad that we've got here and we're coming off a pretty spectacular summer."

Australia will have just three practice sessions before the first Test, which is set to begin in Rawalpindi from Friday (March 4). The three matches will be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. "We've got enough people to cover all the bases," Lyon said.

"Whatever team we go out with, we're confident we can play a really, really positive brand of cricket here in Pakistan."

Other than Lyon, Australia also have two other spinners in Ashton Agar and the uncapped Mitchell Swepson, vying for a spot, if they go in with two spinners in the XI.

However, Lyon feels the wicket at the Pindi Cricket Stadium are just like the ones in the UAE and we could expect a lot of runs in the first two days before the spinners come into play.

"There's not much grass on it, Lyon said. It's going to be pretty shiny come day one pretty nice to bat on the first couple of days. Then we'll look to hopefully spin and reverse swing may come into it," Lyon, who has 405 wickets from 105 Tests, said.

"We've seen both Marnus and Smithy play a role in taking some big wickets. I think they will have the opportunity to get the ball at some stage," he added.
