Australia made light work of New Zealand’s 181/6 in the first T20I on October 1 (Wednesday) at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, winning the contest with 21 balls to spare. In doing so, Australia almost broke a record, as they recorded the third-fastest run chase (180+ target).
Mitchell Marsh’s Australian side fell short of the record run chase by a margin of three balls, as Pakistan still hold the record, with their run chase of 205 against New Zealand earlier in the year. Australia are second and third on the list, with Marsh’s men smashing 215 against West Indies with 23 balls to spare.
Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, Australia have been a dominant force in the shortest format, winning 15 out of the 17 T20Is. One of the biggest reasons why Australia chased down the total with a lot of ease was because of skipper Marsh, who smashed 85 off 43 balls.
If not for his untimely dismissal, Australia could have very well chased down the total in record time.
