It took India 10 balls, and Jasprit Bumrah four deliveries to break Australia’s stubborn 10th-wicket stand on day five of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The ace paceman cleaned up Nathan Lyon with a stunning inswinger and finished with figures of 5/57, taking his series tally to 30 wickets.
India now have a target - they need 340 runs in 92 overs.
India will have to create history if they want to win this game. Mind you, Australia’s 231-run chase against England in 2013 is the highest by any team at the MCG. If India win this game, this will also be their highest chase in SENA Tests and the third-highest overall in Test cricket.
After Australia got a first-innings lead of 105, Jasprit Bumrah and Co. came out all guns blazing in the second essay. The ace paceman knocked over Sam Konstas for eight before Mohammed Siraj did the same to Usman Khawaja. Labuschagne and Steven Smith then added 37 runs for the third wicket before Bumrah came back and wreaked havoc.
The Men in Blue had Australia reduced to 91/6, but Labuschagne and Australia's lower-order staged a stunning comeback in the final session. Labuschagne (70) and Pat Cummins (41) first added 57 runs for the seventh wicket before Lyon and Boland survived 110 balls on day four.
Lyon scored 41 off 55, while Boland managed 15* off 74 deliveries. The last wicket put on 61 runs and has made things extremely difficult for India. In fact, Australia’s last four wickets produced 143 runs.
