Australia takes lead in Women's Ashes after McGrath's allround show

Tahlia McGrath claimed 3-26 and scored an unbeaten 91 off 49 balls as Australia beat England in the first T20I

Tahlia McGrath smashed an unbeaten 91 off 49 balls and claimed 3-26 as Australia outclassed England in the first T20I by nine wickets at Adelaide on Thursday. The hosts now lead the multi-format Women's Ashes by 2-0 with two more T20Is, a lone Test and three ODIs remaining.

After asked to bat first, England put up a total of 169/4 in 20 overs with opener Danielle Wyatt scoring a 54-ball 70. Tammy Beaumont (30 off 24 balls) also made a vital contribution in the opening partnership of 82 runs alongside Wyatt before Nat Sciver added 59 runs for the second wicket in 38 balls.

McGrath then struck in quick succession to remove Sciver (32 off 23 balls) and Wyatt in the 17th over and then dismissed Amy Jones in the 19th over.

Chasing 170, Australia lost Alyssa Healy in the fourth over by spinner Sophie Ecclestone before McGrath joined to skipper Meg Lanning (64 not out off 44 balls) to take the hosts over the line. England used six bowlers who had no answers to McGrath's onslaught which included 13 boundaries and a six.

Lanning played the perfect foil as she clubbed eight boundaries in her fifty.

The second T20I will be played on Saturday at Adelaide which will also host the third match of the series.
