Australia's Spin Sensation Reported For Illegal Bowling Action
The bowler, who picked up 16 wickets in the two Tests at Galle, will now undergo an assessment at International Cricket Council (ICC) approved testing centres
The star of Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka for two Tests, Matthew Kuhnemann, has been reported for suspected illegal bowling action by officials after the end of the series, informed Cricket Australia (CA) on February 12 (Wednesday).
Kuhnemann, who picked up 16 wickets in the two Tests at Galle, will now undergo assessments at International Cricket Council (ICC) approved testing centres to prove that his bowling action is legal.
"The Australian team was notified of the match officials' referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter," the CA statement read.
CA, in addition to saying that it would liaison with the ICC and experts to find a quick fix to the problem, backed the left-arm bowler to make a speedy return from the trials, which will be the first in Kuhnemann’s career.
"Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four one-day internationals. He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action has been questioned,” added the CA in their statement.
Meanwhile, a cricket.com.au report said, “If that process – using state-of-the-art technology as well as video evidence of Kuhnemann's bowling in the Test – deems his action illegal, the 28-year-old will be suspended from bowling until his action has been modified, and a subsequent assessment is passed.”
Though Kuhnemann will not be able to bowl in international cricket, subject to him being reported, he can bowl in domestic competitions for Tasmania, his state team.
