Back from injury, Riyan Parag to lead Assam in Ranji Trophy
Parag has suffered a shoulder injury and had gone through a surgery, which put him out of South Africa and England T20Is
The flamboyant youngster from Assam Riyan Parag is ready to return to professional cricket after a prolonged shoulder injury that required surgery.
He will return to the seventh round of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season and lead his home state, Assam, in their final league game against Saurashtra in Rajkot.
His shoulder injury kept him out of the game after the third T20I against Bangladesh in October 2024. He also missed the South Africa T20Is and the ongoing T20I series against England after undergoing surgery. He lacked the game time to present a case for the Champions Trophy selection.
Overall, in his young career, Parag has played 10 white-ball games for India after making a debut against Zimbabwe in July 2024. His all-round skills made him a likely selection under Gautam Gambhir, as the coach prefers multi-skilled players in the playing 11.
In the nine T20Is he has played, he has 106 runs at a strike rate of 151.42 and has picked four wickets in the 18.2 overs he has bowled so far in the format. He also has three wickets in the sole ODI he has played.
However, his return to the Ranji side would be much awaited. He had scored 378 runs in just six innings at an average of 75.6 and an incredulous strike rate of 113.85. He also hit the most sixes (20) last season.
Assam, currently languishing at the bottom of Elite Group D, hopes to register its first win of the season after Parag returns and strengthens the side.
