Fast bowler Deepak Chahar's return to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season has received a further setback as he has suffered a back injury during his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo.
Chahar, who has been at the NCA for over a month checked himself in after suffering a quadricep tear during the T20 International (T20I) series against West Indies.
CSK spent INR 14 crore on Chahar in the IPL 2022 auction. He was initially set to miss the majority of the season, but the latest setback could see him miss the entire season. CSK are however yet to receive a formal report from the BCCI mentioning the extent of the injury.
Chahar's absence has clearly been felt by CSK, who have lost all their four matches this season so far. CSK have missed Chahar especially in the powerplay, a phase they have managed to pick up just two wickets at an economy of 8.62.
Chahar has picked up 42 wickets at an economy rate of 7.61 for CSK in the IPL.
While Mukesh Choudhary, Tushar Deshpande, Adam Milne and Chris Jordan have been given a go with the new ball, none of them have bee as effective as Chahar.
The Super Kings are yet to try out KM Asif and Rajvardhan Hangarkekar this season so far.
The four-time IPL winners take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) later today (April 12) at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
