It’s taken only three days for the 50-over Women’s World Cup to deliver a significant result as Bangladesh Women have not just beaten, but thrashed Pakistan Women in Colombo to go second on the table. In the most one-sided match of the tournament, yet, Bangladesh bowled Pakistan out for 129 before knocking down the target with seven wickets and 18.5 overs to spare.
With the win, Bangladesh Women extended their 100% win record over Pakistan Women in 50-over World Cups, with them also winning the clash in the 2022 50-over World Cup at Seddon Park, Hamilton. That, though, was a close win, with Bangladesh getting over the line by just 9 runs.
Despite losing the toss, Bangladesh were on the front foot from the very first over. Marufa Akter cleaned up both Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin for golden ducks in the first over, and the Nigar Sultana-led side did not look back after that.
Nahida Akter broke the 42-run stand for the third wicket between Muneeba Ali and Rameen Shamim and, from that point onwards, Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Marufa and Nahida took two wickets apiece before Shorna Akter took 3/5 and cleaned up the tail to bowl Pakistan out for 129.
In response, Bangladesh lost opener Fargana Hoque early, in the fourth over, but that was just a minor blip as they chased the target without breaking a sweat thanks to Rubya Haider (54*).
The massive NRR boost means that Bangladesh now are second on the Women’s World Cup 2025 table, ahead of India. They next take on England Women in Guwahati on October 7. Pakistan, meanwhile, have a quick turnaround as they take on co-hosts and arch-rivals India on October 5 (Sunday) in Colombo.
