BBL Champions Hobart Hurricanes Invited To Play In Global Super League 2025

The tournament is expected to take place in the Caribbean in July 2025

Reigning Big Bash League (BBL) champions Hobart Hurricanes have been invited to play in the second edition of the Global Super League (GSL), which will be played in July 2025, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo. The Hurricanes won the BBL title for the first time in January this year.

If the Hurricanes were to accept, they would be the second Australian team to feature in the tournament after Victoria's state team participated in the tournament in December 2024. Former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson led the team, which also features Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards.

It is understood that Cricket Tasmania will send a strong squad to the Caribbean. The GSL will be played during Australia's Test tour of the West Indies but before the T20I series that follows.

Cricket Victoria chief executive Nick Cummins said that the players had a terrific experience of playing in the tournament last year. "It was amazing," Cummins told ESPNcricinfo.

"We were really impressed with how they ran the tournament, the quality of the cricket and the quality of the wickets. I've long been an advocate for bringing back the Champions League, and I'd really love to see that take place, at the moment, the GSL is the closest thing that cricket's got to that.

"I think they prefer that we're playing in Big Bash colours rather than state colours, and hopefully that's something that evolves too."

The inaugural edition of the tournament saw Bangladesh side Rangpur Riders win the title, beating Victoria in the final in Guyana.
