BCB Not At Fault For Shakib Not Getting Paid: Here’s Why
Shakib, who last played for Bangladesh on their tour of India in 2024, did not get a chance to play his final Test at home
Bangladesh's legendary all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, was not paid for the last four months of his contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). They confirmed the same but cited its inability to process the payment for things that were not in their control.
The reason given by BCB was that Shakib’s Bangladesh bank accounts were frozen.
"It's true that he [Shakib] is yet to receive a salary for September, October, November and December, and that is largely due to the fact his bank account got frozen," an official of the board was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Shakib, who last played for the Bangladesh national team on their tour of India in 2024, was not given a chance to play his final Test at home against South Africa. Protests erupted when his name was announced in the squad, as he was part of the government that fell after a bloody student protest.
Since he had already announced his retirement from T20Is and was unable to play his final Test at home, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was seen as his final goodbye to the game in national colours. However, he was banned from bowling while playing County cricket, and thus, his chances of selection in the national team became bleak.
So, will Shakib get his payment now? Nazmul Abedin, a member of the new BCB, said that he will get his due, which is around 48 million Bangladeshi Taka.
"He [Shakib] will get his salary as per the agreement because whether you play or not, there is an agreement in place, and certainly, we will try to fulfil our commitment as per the agreement,” Nazmul said.
