BCCI proposes Women's IPL from 2023, T20 Challenge returns
A six-team Women's IPL is considered for the next year with the existing IPL franchises given a chance to buy a women's team
The BCCI is considering to start a six-team Women's IPL from next year with the Women's T20 Challenge set to return after an year's absence, set to be played around the IPL 2022 playoffs.
At a governing council meeting of the IPL in Mumbai, it was decided that the existing IPL franchises will be given a chance to buy a women's team. In any other case, outside bids will be allowed for the franchises.
"It [Women's IPL] has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said after the meeting on Friday."
Recently, Cricket West Indies had announced their plans for three-team women's league alongside the Caribbean Premier League while Pakistan Cricket Board also announced that plans for a women's competition.
The Women's T20 Challenge began in 2020 with three teams playing four matches before the IPL playoffs which did not happen last year as the IPL had to finished across two phases due to the pandemic. Pune is likely to host the matches for this year.
