NEWSThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had planned to add a couple of teams to the Indian Premier League from the 2022 season, with one of the teams touted to be based in Ahmedabad that houses the biggest cricket stadium in the world. However, the uncertainty regarding the 2021 season that had to be postponed indefinitely following a cluster of positive cases within the bio-bubble, has put a spanner in their works.
According to a senior BCCI official, the board will not release the tender till at least July 2021, even though it was originally decided to be released in May.
“Time is not right to even talk about the new IPL teams at this stage. We have to first decide the way forward on the suspended season and then only decisions can be taken on the new teams for IPL 2022. No discussion in this regard is happening at this stage in the BCCI. We don’t see any moment on this before July”, a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.co
Last week, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly indicated that according to the early estimates, if the IPL 2021 fails to go ahead, then the loss would be around 2500 Crore for the BCCI. Two new teams, however, will add a huge component to the central revenue pool with each team slated to be priced at a minimum 1500 Crore tender. The TV rights deal will see a jump too, with the BCCI set to release a new tender for the rights after the 2022 season.
