The much-awaited retention rules for the Indian Premier League mega auction 2025 will be out on Saturday after the Governing Council meeting, which is set to take place in Bengaluru on September 28 (Saturday). Cricbuzz has reported that the rules may be announced on the same day before the all-important general body meeting, which is set to take place on Sunday.
There have been many contentions around the decision to ensure the Retention and Right to Match (RTM) cards align with the teams' interests, but given the non-agreement between multiple stakeholders, things have now been moved to the BCCI’s court, whose decision will be final and binding.
The BCCI met with all IPL team owners in the last week of July, and since then, the franchises have been confused about the GC's eventual course of action. If reports elsewhere are to be believed, BCCI may allow 5-6 retentions per team, including the RTM option.
The Governing Council, led by IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, will also decide on the venue and dates for the mega auction. Last year, the auction took place in Dubai, and the BCCI wants to continue hosting these events outside of Indian territory. Saudi Arabia has shown keen interest in extending the red carpet for the auction.
