As it happens, Yuvraj Singh has mentored the young southpaw, who, like Yuvraj, also bowls left-arm spin.
On May 8 (Wednesday) against the Lucknow Super Giants, he scored 75 off just 28 balls and along with Travis Head (89 off 30) to chase down the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs.
Taking to the micro-blogging site X to express his pleasure, Yuvraj said to Abhishek, “Well played…be consistent, be patient, your time is around the corner.” Meanwhile, he added a cheeky “what planet are you batting [on], my friend” for Head’s innings against LSG.
Earlier this IPL, Yuvraj had taken to X to praise Abhishek’s innings against Mumbai Indians, where he scored 63 runs off just 23 deliveries, and his team scored 277, the highest-ever total in IPL history. He was also awarded the Player of the Match for his special innings.
However, Yuvraj also joked that he’d punish him for the shot he got out on, as Abhishek tried to clear his front leg and hoist leg spinner Piyush Chawla over mid-wicket, but he couldn’t time it properly and was caught by his fellow Punjab player Naman Dhir.
“Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante! (No words for you. Only punishment!),” Yuvraj tweeted.
