Jos Buttler has hinted that his elevation to white-ball captaincy following the departure of Eoin Morgan could bring an end to his Test career. Buttler has not been picked in the Test side since he picked up an injury following the fourth Ashes Test last year.
Buttler's first assignment as England's full-time captain will be the white-ball series against India starting Thursday (July 7) with the first T20 International (T20I) at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.
Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara, who is also the director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL - a team Buttler plays for - had previously backed Buttler to open for England in Tests, but that does not seem to be a priority for the wicketkeeper-batter.
Given that Morgan too had to cut short his Test career to pursue leading England in limited-overs, will Buttler too go the same way?
"Certainly being captain of the white-ball team is my number one priority. I'm very focused and really excited for the challenge that lies ahead," Buttler told reporters.
"I think it's going to be a really big challenge and one that needs my full-time attention. Talking about the Test stuff might be a question that never has to be answered unless someone wants to pick me for the team, which hasn't been the case.
"It's quite obvious at the minute I was left out on merit and rightfully so. I had a poor Ashes series and I'm not part of the team at the moment. The team is playing fantastically well, so it doesn't look like a team that needs people."
