In a bizarre incident, a fire broke out inside the Gabba Stadium during the home team Brisbane Heat’s Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 match against the Hobart Hurricanes on January 16 (Thursday).
It was after the end of the fourth over of the Hurricanes’ innings, that the camera picked up a fire near a stage where a man, sitting calmly, was putting it out. It was after a delay of nearly 10 minutes that the match restarted as police and medics present at the stadium came into action and the situation was controlled.
There have not been any instances of fire in recent times. One that comes vividly to mind is the 1996 ODI World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka. The former were behind in the game, and the spectators started a fire in the stadium, resulting in Sri Lanka winning the game.
As for the BBL game, the Hurricanes, who have not lost a game chasing this season, set up a target of 202 to win. At the time of the fire, they were 47 without loss at the end of the first four overs.
