The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule that would bring a huge respite to all the domestic teams in this upcoming domestic season, that’s beginning soon. Now, teams who are playing multi-day games are allowed to make injury replacements throughout a match in case of ‘serious injuries’.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, the playing conditions have been updated after the introduction of ‘Serious Injury Replacement’ rule, and now, if an external blow results in a fracture, deep cut, or dislocation and renders the player unavailable for the rest of the game, teams can replace him/her with a like for like replacement.
The teams will have to nominate substitutes at the time of the toss, and only from this list will the match referee allow for a replacement. The on-field umpires will be the deciding authority on the injury replacement matters and will take a call on the basis of consultation given by the doctor and match referees. Only in case of wicketkeeper injuries is a player allowed as a substitute from outside the nominated players.
The team manager will be the authority within the team who will deal with the match referee, and they will have to submit a serious injury replacement request on a form which shall mention all the details of the injury, including the name, timing and extent of the injury.
It has been mentioned in the new rules that the injury replacement will be approved if it is ascertained that the replacement is a like for like whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his team for the remainder of the match. Notably, a serious injury replacement will also have to bear all warnings, penalty times and suspensions imposed on the replaced player. The records and statistics will include both the replacement and the replaced players' numbers for that game.
Apart from this, two other changes are made for the new domestic season by the BCCI, one in case of deliberate short runs, and the other in case of retiring batters.
Recently, a huge debate opened up on the case of injury replacements in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy when Rishabh Pant and Chris Woakes had to walk out to bat with fractured body parts to save a match for their team. This new rule by the BCCI will prevent such instances from happening in the domestic circuit.
