Nitish Kumar announced an award for IPL’s youngest centurion who hails from his state
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an award for the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored the fastest century by an Indian in the Indian Premier League (IPL) yesterday, April 29, against the Rajasthan Royals. The century was the second quickest in IPL overall, and Suryavanshi also became the youngest centurion in the history of the T20 format.
Suryavanshi hails from Samastipur in Bihar and began his cricketing journey there. He also used to practice in Patna. He has already represented Bihar in age-group tournaments and played for the Indian U19 team. After impressing at that level, RR bought him in this year’s auction for ₹1.1 crore when he was just 13 years old.
CM Nitish Kumar took to the microblogging app X (formerly Twitter) to announce a cash prize of ₹10,00,000 for the youngster’s performance.
“Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Vaibhav Suryavanshi of Bihar, who became the youngest player (14 years) to score a century in the history of the IPL,” the post said.
“He has become a new hope for Indian cricket through his hard work and talent. Everyone is proud of him. I met Mr. Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his father in 2024 at 1 Anne Marg, where I wished him a bright future.
“After his brilliant performance in the IPL, I also congratulated him over the phone. Mr. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a young cricketer from Bihar, will also be awarded an honourarium of Rs 10 lakh by the state government. I hope Vaibhav sets new records for the Indian team in the future and brings glory to the country.”
Suryavanshi became a sensation overnight in the cricketing world after his hundred, and adulation poured in for the teenager from everywhere, with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Adam Gilchrist amongst others praising him.
He made his IPL debut on April 19 against the Lucknow Super Giants. He scored a 20-ball 34 on debut and then had a low-key outing against RCB where he scored a 12-ball 16. The century came in just his third innings in the competition.
