BPL 2024-25: Why was striker given out obstructing the field for non-striker's mistake?

According To Law 37.3.1 of Cricket, “If the delivery is not a No ball, the striker is out Obstructing the field if wilful obstruction or distraction by either batter prevents the striker being out Caught.”

The last two overs of Match 13 of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 between Rangpur Riders and Fortune Barishal saw everything, including a batter being given out, obstructing the field. In this case, the batter was Bangladesh’s spin-bowling all-rounder, Mahedi Hasan.

The incident occurred in the penultimate over, with the Riders needing 39 off 12 deliveries. Khushdil Shah smashed the first two deliveries for maximums before getting out on the next ball. Jahandad Khan, bowling the 19th over, got the fourth delivery in the right place to Mahedi.

The right-hander went for the cross-batted heave but could only get an edge that ballooned to the middle of the pitch. The bowler went for the catch, and the two batters took for a single. Nurul Hasan, at the non-striker’s end, changed his direction and started running on the pitch.

There was a mild collision, and Jahandad eventually failed to get to the ball. The left-arm seamer then appealed, and the decision was sent upstairs. The third umpire then had enough evidence to rule Mahedi out of obstructing the field. Despite Nurul being the actual culprit, it was Mahedi who was given out.

And why was Mahedi given out?

According To Law 37.3.1 of Cricket, “If the delivery is not a No ball, the striker is out Obstructing the field if wilful obstruction or distraction by either batter prevents the striker being out Caught.”

Nurul, however, made amends in the final over, and that too in some style. With 26 needing off six deliveries, Nurul smoked Kyle Mayers for 6, 4, 4, 6, 4 and 6 to win the game for the Riders.
